Director: Duncan Jones

Following a remarkable debut with Moon, Duncan Jones’ sophomore effort is a highly gimmicky, though enormously watchable science fiction thriller. Along with his screenwriter Ben Ripley, Jones intelligently creates suspense not only within the eight minutes of each reality, but in the lull between them through the protagonist’s attempts to discover the nature of his existence and the project that he is involved with. Although in the identity of the terrorist the film doesn’t offer an interesting villain, the film isn’t about that. Its best moments are those between Gyllenhaal and Monaghan, both coming off of their career best performances in Brothers and Trucker, respectively.
