Director: Stacie Passion
In the lead role, Deadwood standout Robin Weigert smirks her way through Concussion, an updating of Belle de Jour with a lesbian twist. It is not necessarily the actress’ fault that Abby never quite amounts to that much of a character–first-time writer/director Stacie Passion’s screenplay is too willing to ignore her flaws in favor of the suggestion that she is simply a victim of suburban malaise. In fact, the film isn’t quite willing to explore any difficult terrain. Even the act of prostitution is so bourgeois that what follows an orgasm is a passing-down of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. To the film’s credit, the sex scenes are often titillating, and not in the fetishistic way that a straight male filmmaker might have depicted two women in bed. As for the conversations in-between, very little amounts to much and, by the end, it is unclear what Abby has learned, how she will cope with her despair, and what the point of it all was.
